In a continued attempt to improved quality of life and community outreach, civic leaders from Oklahoma City joined chef Chris Becker and Oklahoma City Thunder player Enes Kanter at the Devon Boathouse last week to celebrate the ongoing National Seafood Month.

The event last Wednesday was part of the Seafood Nutrition Partnership’s national public health campaign to educate Americans about the health and heart benefits of seafood. Oklahoma City was one of only nine markets across the country chosen for the grassroots education campaign.

The event was a celebration of the flavors and health benefits of seafood. Along with Becker and Kanter, the event included Homeland stores registered dietitian Alyson Fendrick and executive director of the Seafood Nutrition Partnership Linda Cornish.

“Seafood consumption is one of the best ways to incorporate omega-3 fatty acids into your diet,” Cornish said. “Low omega-3 intake contributes to 84,000 deaths annually, making omega-3 deficiency a leading dietary contributor to preventable death in the U.S.”

Oklahoma City residents are invited to participate in other Seafood Month events. Various local restaurants have partnered with the coalition to form Seafood Week to encourage Oklahomans to meet the USDA dietary guidelines of eating seafood twice a week.

For his part, Kanter spoke to the crowd about his switch to seafood for game and practice preparation. Kanter, a Turkish player obtained by the Thunder last season in a trade with the Utah Jazz, said he made the switch after his rookie season and dropped about 40 pounds. He said he felt lighter and more energetic for games and training.

Becker, who also works at the School of Culinary Arts at Francis Tuttle, used his squid-ink infused pasta to make a beautiful puttanesca with Kanter’s help.

Becker’s terrific hand-cranked Della Terra Pasta is available both dried and fresh at Whole Foods Market. Becker is a New Yorker who came to Oklahoma for love and has since shared his passion for pasta. He learned his trade at Del Posto in New York, the ultra-successful concept from Joseph and Lidia Bastianich and Mario Batali, specializing in updated Italian classics and fresh pasta made daily.
